Now, let's dive in to today's episode. Hi, I'm Annette Richmond. Thank you for joining me for today's episode. Now, one of the things that I get asked a lot about is just how can people get started with short form or social media videos. They just don't know, where do I record, how How do I edit? So today I'm going to share a few things: where to record your video, so where, how to record your video, how to record your videos for easy editing, because I know editing can take a while. Apps that you can use to edit and capture your videos. I do 95% of my recording and editing of all my videos on my smartphone. So I'm going to give you apps that you can use that are available on iPhone and also on Androids. And then I'm going to talk to you just briefly about adding music that won't get your videos flagged.

If you want some more detailed information on music, copyright and royalty-free music, listen to episode 76 of this podcast. To get started, don't be afraid of the technology. Most of the apps, recording and editing videos, are pretty user friendly. Just allow yourself some time to play around with things, experiment. And don't worry, you're not going to break the app. And if you create a video and you're not happy with it, well, you will learn something each time you create a video that you can use to go back and create your next one. As far as the essential tools for recording short form videos, as I mentioned, I record most of my videos on my smartphone, either directly on the smartphone or using an app to record the videos. If you have an iPhone, I would suggest that you get started with Clips, which is a very, very simple to use app where you can record and edit and add captions, et cetera. You can also record your videos directly on several social media platforms. You can record them directly on Instagram. You can record up to 90 seconds. On YouTube, you can record up to three minutes of video, and on TikTok, you can record up to 10 minutes of video.

[00:03:25.290] - Speaker 1

One thing that I recommend to avoid a lot of editing problems. A lot of people struggle because they're recording a video. It's a two-minute video, and they're just talking. They have an idea of what they're going to say, and before you know it, they've been talking for five minutes, and then they make some mistakes along the way, so they have to go back and re-record. It takes them two hours to make a two-minute video. What I recommend particularly if you are just starting out, is to either use a script or to use some notes, which is something that I do both of those to record my short form videos. Not a how to video where I'm describing and showing something on the screen, but to record a short form video or even a podcast episode. Write a script as you speak. So if you use contractions, don't say you are. If normally speaking, you would say your. Now, once you have either a short script or even some notes, record one line or one phrase at a time. And that way, if you make a mistake, you can stop and just rerecord that one line or that one phrase and not have to go back and rerecord the entire video again.

[00:04:56.870] - Speaker 1

It also makes it easy to get rid of dead space, the silence that you hear. A lot of people, if they're recording a video, they stop talking, they take a breath, and then they start talking again, and you have that dead space in between you speaking. That's something that you want to avoid as much as possible on short form or social media videos. If you do, in fact, record one line at a time, when you go in to edit, all you need to do is trim the ends of each clip or each section of the video rather than having to go in and get into a more complicated editing. When it comes to editing your videos, there are several apps that you can use. If you are recording your videos right in an app like TikTok or Instagram, you can also edit the video right in there and add captions, etc. But if you prefer to just record the videos on your smartphone, there are several apps that you can use that would allow you to add text, captions, effects like emojis, gifs, fancy text, etc. The three that I recommend that I've used often are clips, which I mentioned, you can also record on that, but it's only available for iPhones or CapCut, which is available for iPhones and Androids.

[00:06:26.880] - Speaker 1

I use CapCut most of the time to edit my videos. I find it to be very user friendly, and they have a lot of editing options on there. Inshot is another app that's available for iPhone and also for Android. It's very similar to clips and very, very user friendly. One big difference between clips and CapCut and InShot is that CapCut and InShot also allow you to add music to your video. Now, when it comes to adding music on your videos, which you should, unless you're speaking on the video, if you have something that is a video with a text overlay, you should definitely add some music. When you do that, I recommend that you use the music available on the apps. For example, if you upload a video to Instagram, the platform will automatically recommend music to go with it. Usually, that music is from their trending music, so it's going to probably work very well with your video. If you are uploading your videos to YouTube, I recommend that you purchase your own royalty-free music. Now, I'm not a lawyer, so this is not legal advice, but based on my experience, deposit photos, royalty-free music is great for that.

[00:07:55.840] - Speaker 1

I've used it for several years for my live show intros and outros, and I've never had any of the videos flagged by YouTube. Another option is to create your own music using AI, and I have found that Suno, S-U-N-O, to be a great resource for that. So again, don't be afraid of the technology. Start by recording videos right on your phone. If you're nervous to be on camera and you want to do a talking head video, then just start by recording videos every day for seven days or 14 days. Don't even post them any place. If you go back and look at them after that time period, you'll find that you're getting much better. Going back to the technology, give yourself some time to play around with the apps. Choose one and play around with that until you get good at it. Clip Clips, as I mentioned, is a very, very simple editing app. Inshot is also very easy to work with. And again, InShot is available for iPhone and also Android. Capcut is my editing app of choice. There is just so much. It's a very, very robust editing app. You can also find a lot of templates on there that you can easily to create trendy, fun videos.
